Sompting Estate is partnering with Sustainable Sussex to develop ideas for community-building projects linked to the land in Sompting, starting with bringing their Sussex Chilli Farm project to Sompting.
Community in the Countryside
Sompting Estate is partnering with Sompting Parish Council to develop community volunteering and learning and enjoyment opportunities in our countryside. This includes a program of guided walks. In 2017 these included a wetland walk and a glow worm walk. The Parish Council's Leighton Clay is coordinating the project with support from Estate Managing Trustee Mike Tristram.
Other Volunteering Opportunities
Our local National Park Ranger is Tom Parry and one of the things he does is to organise opportunities for volunteers to contribute to local conservation work. For example on the Sompting Estate volunteers sometimes help with dewponds maintenance and scrub management. Tom can be contacted on Tom.Parry@southdowns.gov.uk . Occasionally the Estate will also organise other volunteering opportunities, for example a community primrose planting in spring 2013: if you would like to be informed of such opportunities please email us using our Contact page.

Real on-the-ground benefits from the creation of the National Park depend on a good working relationship between the Park Authority and the land managers. The Estate’s Managing Trustee Mike Tristram works with the National Park Authority www.southdowns.gov.uk , as Chairman of the South Downs Land Management Group www.southdownsland.com , to help ensure good cooperation between the new Authority and the farmers and landowners who manage the landscape.
