Farming in Sompting

 

The downland farms of the Sompting Estate, Lychpole, Upton, Titch Hill and Church Farms, shown on the map below, have changed their boundaries over the years.  The four old Sompting farming manors, Sompting Abbotts, Lychpole, Peverel and Cokeham, ran from near the coast up to the downland heights.  So each manor's farms had a variety of lands and could graze livestock on the chalk in winter and on the marsh in the summer. 

 

Each farm still has a variety of land types.  Sheep and cattle are raised in a rotating patchwork of arable rotational crops and grassland.  This traditional farming mix helps to sustain both soil fertility and also wildlife.  Sompting Estate's three main farms are members of the Arun to Adur Farmers Group , working together for wildlife on a landscape scale.
